For more than 30 years, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences across the United States and throughout the world with its dazzling artistry, inspired by the cultural tapestry of Brazil. Whether in the streets or on stage in the most prestigious theaters, the dancers and musicians of DanceBrazil never fail to enthrall audiences with the company’s unique fusion of Afro-Brazilian movement, contemporary dance and Capoeira, the traditional dance/martial arts form that originated in Africa and evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement. The company’s much-anticipated return to the Williams Center features Jelon Vieira’s newest work, Batuke (“drumming”), which thrives on the rhythms created by human body movements, by smooth samba steps, Capoeira kicks, and the stick dance Maculelé; and Memórias (2010) which honors the roots of African culture that define the Afro-Brazilian soul of music and dance.
