Hailed by critics everywhere for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is considered the most authentic flamenco touring company in the field today. The dancers and musicians have successfully brought to the stage the essence, purity, and integrity of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms without the use of tricks or gimmicks. All aspects of flamenco—dance, song, and music—are interrelated and given equal weight in the presentations of Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal spirit within the company—the very heart and soul of flamenco. Star dancer Soledad Barrio has drawn praise throughout the world, and was honored by New York critics with a coveted “Bessie” award for Outstanding Creative Achievement. The New York Times dance critic Alistair Macaulay wrote of her, “I can think of no current ballet star in the world as marvelous as she,” and Tobi Tobias wrote in Arts Journal, “Certainly no one we can go and see today has Barrio’s transformative power.” She is the founding artistic director of Noche Flamenca, together with her husband Martín Santangelo. With this powerful ensemble of virtuoso Spanish guitarists, vocalists, and supporting dancers, Noche Flamenca exemplifies the Spanish ideal of duende.
