WRITING RESPONSE EVENT

Sunday, October 20, 1–3 p.m.
Williams Center Room 108 & Gallery

This event will prepare participants to be enriched and delighted by award winning poet and essayist Ross Gay’s residency at Lafayette October 23-25. Participants will be invited to write about and share what in their daily lives delights them, sparked by the essays in Gay’s newest book and Lafayette’s 2019 Community Reading selection, The Book of Delights, in which he chronicles his own delights from seemingly routine encounters and beautiful and not-so-beautiful moments. Those interested in this experience are invited to begin noticing what delights them.

Ross Gay '96, author of the 2019-2020 Community Reading, The Book of Delights, will present a keynote address followed by a book signing on October 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Colton Chapel.

The writing worskhop will be facilitated by Marilyn Shoemaker Hazelton, who edits red lights, an international tanka journal, and is a past President of the Tanka Society of America. As a teaching artist rostered with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, she approaches writing as a path for empathy, understanding, and awareness. She is a recipient of the Allentown Arts Commission’s Arts Ovation Award. Her poetry and essays have appeared in diverse publications.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Delights, coming to the Williams Center Gallery January 4–February 9, organized by guest curator Elizabeth Johnson.

The workshops are free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
