Professor Lammers will discuss important "personable" aspects of being a physician. It is no longer enough to be a stellar scientist to be a successful health care professional. According to the most recent AAMC-HHMI commission reports, the US needs compassionate physicians who can relate to and understand patients from multiple perspectives (including ethical, philosophical, economic, and cultural) and understand how those factors contribute to their health. Prof. Lammers will talk about recent attempts by the medical community to change from the traditional (biological) approach to a more dynamic (bio-psycho-social) account of medicine and the implications this shift has for you as future applicants for health professional schools.
