Islam is stereotypically represented as a religion which oppresses women and limits their freedom. However, many scholars have found evidence in Islamic texts which is supportive of women's rights. Whereas Western concepts of feminism are often resisted as foreign and subversive of Muslim culture, arguments for women's equality from within Islam hold a lot of potential for feminists (Hashim). Through having this panel discussion we are trying to see the correlation between Islam and Feminism and also trying to debunk the myth of Islam and feminism having no correlation. We will also be discussing Muslim feminism and how Muslim women from different parts of the world have created different movements and promote feminism in their own way.
