DESCRIPTION:As part of the Lafayette Forum on Technology and the Liberal Ar
ts\, Prof. Matt \nWisnioski will be speaking on “Engineers at War with Th
emselves: 'New \nLuddites'\, Humane Technology\, and the Remaking of a Pr
ofession in the \n1960s” on March 22\, 2012. The talk is drawn from his f
orthcoming book \nEngineers for Change: Competing Visions of Technology i
 n 1960s America (MIT \nPress\, 2012). In his work\, Prof. Wisnioski\, a h
istorian and science\, \ntechnology\, and society (STS) scholar at Virgin
ia Tech\, addresses the ways \nengineering identity and engineering educa
tion were shaped by Cold War \npolitics and cultural debates. By relating
the history of engineering \neducation to longstanding concerns for huma
nistic engineering\, his work shows \nhow liberal ferment in the 1960s an
d a cultural backlash to the place of \ntechnology in society provoked wi
despread debates about integrating \nengineering and the liberal arts. Th
e result was a range of new programs and \ncurricular requirements in eng
ineering schools\, from MIT and Cal Tech to \nHarvey Mudd and even the A.
 B. program at Lafayette.
