Dance played a prominent role in Euopean courts of the Baroque period, both in social and theatrical settings. In this workshop, participants will learn the basic steps and sequences of popular 17th and 18th-century dances including bouree, gigue, saraband, menuet, chaconne, and others. Live music will be provided by Lafayette College's Marquis Consort, directed by Proessor of Music Jorge Torres.

Instructors: Founder and Director of the New York Historical Dance Company, Dr. Dorothy Olsson received her Masters of Music in Musicology from Manhattan School of Music and her PhD. in Performance Studies from New York University. She presents workshops, choreographies, and performances, and has co-authored seven books on historical dance. Dr. Olsson was Assistant Professor of Dance at New York University.

Kaspar D. Mainz, Artistic Director of the New York Historical Dance Company, has appeared in over 700 theatrical performances in Germany, Austria, Luxemborg, Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Russia, Hungary, Poland and Belarus. He is the Artistic Director of Deliciae Theatrales, a group that specializes in theater, dance, and music performances for children. Mr. Mainz has taught at Salzburg University, University of Leipzig, Salzburg Moarteum, and University of Graz, and given workshops in historical dance in Europe and the United States. He is a contributing author on dance in the publication for music pedagogy, Dreiklang. Musik 5/6 (2009).

* This workhop accompanies the concert by viola da gamba virtuoso Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations, Saturday, February 23 at 8:00 pm at the Williams Center for the Arts. Savall's essential contribution on the 1991 film Tous les Matins du Monde made him a star in the early music firmament, garnered France's prestigious Cesar Award for Best Soundtrack and launched the revival of Baroque music. With his ensemble, Savall will recreate the world of emotion and beauty conjured by this award-winning score.
