Chronic sleep deprivation is epidemic among college students. Juggling academic pressures with social demands, buzzing devices, social media, extracurricular activities, and part-time jobs creates the “perfect storm” for sleep disturbance and sleep loss.  To further complicate matters, student circadian rhythms are often “out of sync” with environmental (i.e., light/dark) and societal (i.e., 8:00 am to 6 p.m. work day) schedules. The ensuing sleep deprivation poses significant risk to college student health, performance, and safety. The good news is that sleep is a modifiable health behavior. Dr. Kloss will discuss the science on the causes, correlates, and consequences of sleep deprivation unique to college students, as well as empirically based recommendations for helping students reach their optimal sleep health.
