Socioeconomic status (SES) is considered a fundamental cause of health disparities. However, SES does not fully explain racial health disparities. Higher SES does not provide the same health returns for blacks relative to whites in the US. Significant research finds that experiencing racism negatively impacts various health dimensions. However, we know less about which psychosocial resources may be protective against the negative influence of perceived racism on health. In this talk, I will discuss whether a strong racial identity is a potential protective mechanism.
