What are indigenous religions, and what do they have in common? The answers are not at all clear. This talk will offer a general consideration of the various meanings that scholars and others attribute to the phrases “indigenous religion” and “indigenous religions.” To give these meanings some specificity, it will draw upon examples of indigenous religious practice drawn from the author’s ongoing fieldwork among Adivasis (indigenous people) in eastern Gujarat, India.
