DESCRIPTION:Mathematician Daina Taimina will introduce the audience to what
a hyperbolic \nplane is and how it took her from mathematics to art in un
expected ways.\n\nTaimina is credited at being the first to employ crochet
techniques to \nconstruct hyperbolic surfaces that vividly illustrate ess
ential features of \nnon-Euclidean geometry. Her idea was picked up by The
Institute For Figuring \nand turned into the sensational world-wide ecolo
gical\, Crochet Coral Reef \nproject.\n\nThe Mathematical Association of A
merica--which met in early January--awarded \nTaimiņa's 'Crocheting Advent
ures with Hyperbolic Planes' (AK Peters\; 2009 \nthe 2012 Euler Book Prize
.\n\nThe Euler Book Prize is given to the author or authors of an outstand
ing book \nabout mathematics. In the announcing the prize\, her book was d
escribed as \n“a novel approach to geometry that has brought a whole new a
udience to \nmathematics. In this respect it has greater outreach potentia
l than any book \nwe have previously considered. But it is much more than
that\; it is perfectly \ncapable of standing on its mathematical feet as a
clear\, rigorous\, and \nbeautifully illustrated introduction to hyperbol
ic geometry. It is truly a \nbook where art\, craft\, science\, and mathem
atics come together in perfect \nharmony.
