The bond between Ruth and Naomi in the Scroll of Ruth is more powerful than either woman’s ties to her own people or her own land. Musical works based on the Scroll of Ruth often foreground the Ruth-Naomi friendship, while others focus on the Ruth-Boaz relationship. Composers reinforce these choices with a range of musical techniques. Music has the power not only to read between the lines of a text and to fill in the gaps, but also to create an inner world of the heart and mind.
This lecture/performance is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies through the Lyman Coleman Guest Lecture Fund; supported by the Jewish Studies Program.
