How do our first-year students make the transition from high-school to college reading and writing?  Do any of the literacy habits learned in high school serve them well?  What challenges do they face as they negotiate writing and reading in their first year of college?  Drawing on their findings from the first year of an ongoing, four-year study, Bianca Falbo and Christian Tatu will discuss what they have learned from our students about these questions, and also about the uses and limits of conducting a qualitative, longitudinal study of student writers and their writing.
