The Conversation (dir. Francis Ford Coppola, 1974, 113 min.) Inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blowup (1966) and speaking directly to the distrust and paranoia of the Watergate era, this tight, intelligent thriller also speaks eerily to the present day. Gene Hackman is Harry Caul, a surveillance expert who faces a profound moral dilemma when his talent at recording uncovers a terrible crime. The film Coppola made between the cultural icons of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, The Conversation may be the film that offers the most lasting relevance, given the pervasive encroachments on privacy and the tangle of motives and responsibility embedded in using media to surveil others.

Come once, or come every week. Tuesday nights at 7:00 in the Landis Cinema, Buck Hall.
