The first meeting of the Lafayette Problem Group will take place at 12:30 in Pardee 218 on Friday, September 1.  The brief agenda:  We’ll pick a regular weekly meeting time for the fall semester (not Fridays at 12:30!), and you’ll walk away with a first problem set to work on.

The Problem Group helps you prepare for various mathematics competitions, like the Individual Barge exam, the LVAIC exam, and the national Putnam Mathematics competition.  It’s also just a great opportunity to try some fun and challenging math problems.  Everyone is welcome!  No specific mathematical background is required.

An example … The increasing sequence (1,1,1,2,5) has a remarkable property:  the sum and the product of its numbers are the same value.  Can you find another increasing sequence of 5 positive integers with this remarkable property?  If so, how many can you find?
