This year's Dever Lecture will be given by Steve Norris, Professor of History and Director of the Havighurst Center at Miami University. Dr. Norris is one of the most prominent cultural historians of Russia working in the United States today, and he will be discussing the ways that Russian cultural and political figures have tried to create a "usable past" in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union. He pays particular attention to the way that popular films about Russian history have helped create a new (or revived) form of Russian patriotism and nationalism. He will update the observations made in his 2012 book on the subject with comments about more recent cultural politics in the Russian Federation.
