Title: The Initial Detections of Gravitational Waves with LIGO

Abstract:  I will describe the first two observations of gravitational waves from the mergers of binary black holes made with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).  These observations were both made during the first observing run ‘O1’ of the Advanced LIGO detector network, in the last 4 months of 2015.  This talk will cover the basics of gravitational wave generation and detection, and the ongoing and future goals of laser-based gravitational wave observations.
