Children’s Learning from Video Chat: Ongoing Research at the Lafayette Kids Lab

Online video chat with children is becoming increasingly common because like Skype and FaceTime allow families to have conversations with far-flung loved ones. Adults enjoy these exchanges, but the developmental question is: what do children understand from a person “in the computer”?  Can they learn anything at all? In this Works in Progress talk, Professor Lauren Myers will discuss her published and ongoing research that examines what and how children learn from video chat. This work is important theoretically because it sheds light on the role of social interaction in children’s learning from symbolic sources, and is practically important because of its application to the everyday lives of families with young children.
