Abstract:Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a recent and rapidly developing subject at the interface of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. The aim is to use ideas from algebraic topology to measure the "shape" of data, broadly speaking, so that data scientists can see structure in high-dimensional data sets that may not be visible with traditional statistical methods. I'll provide a quick background to this topic (no prerequisites necessary!) and spend most of the talk going through examples (with lots of fun pictures!) in the literature where the techniques have been used on real data sets.
