DESCRIPTION:*Russian Icons: 1\,000 Years of Tradition*\n\nTraditional Russi
an icon painting is truly one of the great artistic \nmovements in the his
tory of the world and has been a living and evolving art \nform for more t
han 1\,000 years. This illustrated presentation by *Marina \nForbes* deals
with the spiritual and secular significance of Russian \nreligious art fr
om the 10th century to the present day.\n\nIcon making involves the painti
ng of specifically stylized religious images \non wood using traditional n
atural materials and techniques which are \ndetermined by longstanding con
ventions which serve to shape the art form. \nRussian icons reveal a deep
inner spirituality\, incomparably matched by an \nintrinsic rhythm of line
and harmony of coloring. Using a slide show and \nnumerous exhibits\, inc
luding examples of her own work\, Forbes will examine \nthe history of ico
n painting in Russia and will discuss the unique multiple \nnature of the
 icon as a sacred object\, a product of an artistic tradition\, a \nwork of
art with its own inherent aesthetic value\, and a major example of our \n
world cultural heritage. Anyone who has personal icons may bring them for
\nexamination and comment.\n\nMaster iconographer Marina Forbes has been t
eaching icon painting in the \nU.S.\, Europe and Russia for 25 years and l
ectures extensively on Russian \narts\, history\, and culture.\n\nPresente
d in conjunction with the exhibition *Windows to Heaven. Treasures \nfrom
the Museum of Russian Icons.* [1]\n\n/ //image: Mariana Forbes\, Mother of
