Professor Caroline Lee's new research project studies top-down democracy promotion in higher education, at a time when the sector faces crises related to soaring student debt and ballooning administrative costs. Why are national actors like the Obama administration, foundations, and administrators’ professional associations promoting student democracy initiatives, from community-based learning to activism and required engagement 101 courses? What does “good” civic engagement look like in colleges and universities today?

After Professor Lee presents some of her findings, there will be discussion about our own experiences with civic life on campus.

Lunch will be provided.
