DESCRIPTION:African theologians often argue that contemporary African Chris
tianity is an \noutgrowth of older religious traditions. In this lecture
I will argue that \nthere was much that was strange\, eccentric\, and inc
onsistent about \nChristianity in colonial Africa. The lecture will focus
on the reading habits \nand interpretive strategies that inspired Christ
ian nonconformity. \nNonconformists read the Bible idiosyncratically\, sn
ipping bits of text out of \nthe fabric of the book and using these sloga
ns to launch heretical and odd \nways of living. Over time\, some of Afri
ca’s nonconformists sought to \nposition themselves in narrative structur
es that could authenticate and \nlegitimate their dissident religious act
 ivity. That entailed experimentation \nwith voice\, positionality\, and a
 ddressivity.
