A classically trained dancer ready to do (hip-hop) battle? That would be Wang. A balletic B-boy? That’s Ramirez. Leave your expectations of genre and hybrids at the door, though. The vision of this duo from France, its very ethos—writ large in Monchichi—challenges tightly held notions of identity, hyphenates included. “The debate on immigration and cultural diversity needs exactly this type of contribution to remove the tension,” delcares Tanz Magazine. Honji Wang and Sébastien Ramirez deliver humor, poetry, and sociopolitical commentary via stunning, kaleidoscopic new forms.
