“Casting a line out into jazz that lands perfectly pitched between tradition and the future” (WBGO-FM), Marianne Solivan is an incandescent interpreter of standards, and she scintillates and soars on her own originals. Comparisons with Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and Carmen McRae abound, but fall short of capturing Solivan’s own richness, sincerity, and verve. “Her sense of swing and fluent phrasing are cool and natural as an underground spring” (NPR) and on full display with her big band, who match Solivan’s soulful certainty note for note.
