 he 2017 John L. \nHatfield ’67 lecturer. Nottage is a Pulitzer Prize-winni
 ng playwright whose \nlatest play\, /Sweat/\, explores the social effects 
 of industrial decline in \nthe U.S. and is the result of extensive intervi
 ews conducted with residents \nof Reading\, Pennsylvania.\n\nLynn Nottage'
 s plays have been produced widely in the United States and \nthroughout th
 e world. They include /By The Way\, Meet Vera Stark/ (Lily Award\, \nDrama
  Desk Nomination)\, /Ruined/ (Pulitzer Prize\, OBIE\, Lucille Lortel\, New
  \nYork Drama Critics’ Circle\, Drama Desk\, Outer Critics Circle Award an
 d \nAudelco)\, /Intimate Apparel/ (American Theatre Critics and New York D
 rama \nCritics’ Circle Awards for Best Play)\, /Fabulation\, or The Re-Edu
 cation of \nUndine/ (OBIE Award)\, /Crumbs from the Table of Joy/\, /Las M
 eninas/\, /Mud\, \nRiver\, Stone/\, /Por’knockers/ and/ POOF!/. Her new pl
 ay\,/ SWEAT/\, premiered \nat Oregon Shakespeare Festival and subsequently
  played at Arena Stage and the \nPublic Theater. It is scheduled to open o
 n Broadway in March 2017.  In \naddition\, she is working with composer Ri
 cky Ian Gordon on adapting her play \n/Intimate Apparel/ into an opera (co
 mmissioned by The Met/LCT).\n\nShe is the co-founder of the production com
 pany\, Market Road Films\, whose \nmost recent projects include /The Notor
 ious Mr. Bout/ directed by Tony Gerber \nand Maxim Pozdorovkin (Premiere/S
 undance 2014)\, /First to Fall/ directed by \nRachel Beth Anderson (Premie
 re/IDFA\, 2013) and/ Remote Control/ \n(Premiere/Busan 2013- New Currents 
 Award). Over the years\, she has developed \noriginal projects for HBO\, S
 idney Kimmel Entertainment\, Showtime\, This is \nThat and Harpo. She rece
 ntly finished working on Spike Lee’s new Netflix \nseries /She’s Gotta Hav
 e It/.\n\nNottage is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowshi
 p\, the \nSusan Smith Blackburn prize for /SWEAT/\, Steinberg “Mimi” Disti
 nguished \nPlaywright Award\, the Dramatists Guild Hull-Warriner Award\, t
 he inaugural \nHorton Foote Prize\, Lilly Award\, Helen Hayes Award\, the 
 Lee Reynolds Award\, \nand the Jewish World Watch iWitness Award. Her othe
 r honors include the Doris \nDuke Artist Award\, the Laura Pels Master Ame
 rican Dramatist Award\, the \nAmerican Academy of Arts and Letters Award\,
  the National Black Theatre \nFest’s August Wilson Playwriting Award\, a G
 uggenheim Grant\, PEN/Laura Pels \nAward\, Lucille Lortel Fellowship and V
 isiting Research Fellowship at \nPrinceton University. She is a graduate o
 f Brown University and the Yale \nSchool of Drama\, where she has been a f
 aculty member since 2001. She is also \nteaching graduate playwriting at C
 olumbia School of the Arts.\n\nLafayette is celebrating Black Heritage Mon
 th with guest speakers\, poetry\, \nand community discussions throughout t
 he month of February. This year’s \ntheme “Black Agency\, Black Express” f
 ocuses on forms of media relating to \nhow black people create and shape t
 heir lives and the lives of others in \ntheir communities.
