Mark D. W. Edington, Director of the Amherst College Press, will talk about the distinct contributions that liberal arts colleges and their libraries can make to open-access publishing. He will address questions such as Why should research libraries get involved in publishing? Why should the sort of publishing that arises from libraries be open-access publishing? And what are some of the more difficult challenges we need to keep in view as we begin this work?

This lecture is sponsored by the Lafayette Libraries to mark the occasion of the retirement of Neil McElroy, Dean of Libraries, after 26 years of exemplary leadership. Neil is a proponent of open access publishing and has been instrumental in the development of Lever Press, a new, peer-reviewed, open access, digital-first monographic press for scholarship in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Lever Press is a collaborative partnership between the Oberlin Group of college libraries, Amherst College Press, and Michigan Publishing (University of Michigan).

A reception will precede the lecture. Join us from 3 to 4 pm in Kirby Library to raise a glass to Neil and wish him well.
