DESCRIPTION:Dr. Drew Brown is currently an African American Studies Visitin
 g Scholar at \nthe University of Houston. Prior to that\, he taught at Tem
 ple University in \nPhiladelphia\, PA. Dr. Brown studies a wide range of t
 opics surrounding the \nculture and existence of African people\, both con
 tinental and diaspora. More \nspecifically\, his work focuses on the const
 ruction of gender and identity \nthrough contemporary social practices. Hi
 s work examines the cultural \nrelationship of race\, sports\, and gender 
 to Black lives. Dr. Brown is a \nnative of Windsor\, Ont. Canada and is of
  Jamaican ancestry. He attended \nLafayette College where he played varsit
 y football and received a BA in \nEconomics and Business. In 2006\, he was
  drafted into the Canadian Football \nLeague and spent a short time with t
 he Edmonton Eskimos. He went on to \ncomplete a Master’s in African Americ
 an Studies at Clark Atlanta University \nand his Doctorate at Temple Unive
 rsity. His dissertation focuses on NFL draft \nprospects’ conceptions of m
 anhood and ideas of playing in the NFL.\n\nDr. Brown is one of the foremos
 t emerging scholars in the area of race and \nsports. While at Temple\, Dr
 . Brown conceptualized the nation's first annual \nrace and sports confere
 nce. The Passing The Ball: Race and Sports Conference \nis the country's l
 eading conference and conversation\, which explores the role \nof sports i
 n our daily lives through the lens of blackness. The conference \nhas attr
 acted international attention and garnered high praise from his \ncontempo
 raries from around the country.\n\nAs a scholar-activist\, Dr. Brown has p
 articipated in several social justice \ninitiatives. In 2013\, he was invi
 ted to the White House as part of the Black \nLGBT Emerging Leaders progra
 m and participated in cabinet-level conversations \nas an expert on Black-
 male identity in sports. As an LGBT ally\, he worked in \nthe Human Rights
  Campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Dr. \nBrown also is
  an active member of the national movement to end \nmass-incarceration and
  free political prisoners.
