Join Lafayette College Alumni around the world for Wine 3/9 to celebrate our college’s founding!
In 1824, the Marquis de Lafayette visited the United States as a guest of President James Monroe. He visited all 13 former colonies and in each location a banquet was had and grateful Americans toasted Lafayette. During Lafayette's visit to Philadelphia, 200 Eastonians, including James Madison Porter greeted him. Porter was so inspired by the experience, as he worked to establish a college in Easton, he decided to name it in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette. Two years after Lafayette’s visit, on March 9, 1826 Lafayette College's charter was signed.
