Intercultural Development is proud to host Dr. M. Sanjayan as the final guest lecturer in our 2015-2016 Social Justice Speaker Series. Dr. Sanjayan (@msanjayan) is a global conservation scientist, writer and Emmy-nominated news contributor specializing in the role of conservation in improving human well-being. He serves on Conservation International’s senior leadership team as executive vice president and senior scientist.

He is  also the host of the 2015 PBS TV series, Earth – A New Wild  produced by National Geographic Television in association with Passion Pictures.  Filmed in 29 and produced by National Geographic and Passion Pictures, the series reveals how humans are inextricably linked with wild nature.  Sanjayan was also a corresondent for Years of Living Dangerously, the Emmy-winning Showtime series on climate change.

He holds a master’s degree from University of Oregon and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Sanjayan’s peer-reviewed scientific work has been published in journals including Science, Nature and Conservation Biology and his expertise has attracted national media coverage in Outside, Time, Men’s Journal, National Geographic, Afar, Grist and the New York Times. Sanjayan is also the co-editor of Connectivity Conservation (Cambridge University Press).

Sanjayan’s broad-reaching television experience includes numerous documentaries such as Planet Earth: The Future (BBC), Expedition Alaska (Discovery Channel), and Mysteries of the Shark Coast (Discovery Channel). His most recent hosting effort was the critically acclaimed a four part series on energy called Powering the Future (Discovery Channel).   Guest appearances include NBC’s Today Show, CBS This Morning, CBS Evening News, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Weather Channel, MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, CNN, Fox News, and the BBC.

Sanjayan is a sought after speaker on college and business campuses with recent appearances on stage at TED Global, International Women’s Forum, Aspen Environment Forum, Aspen Ideas Festival, Clinton Global Initiative, Google, and the Summit Series. He is a Clinton Global Initiative Senior Advisor, a Catto Fellow at the Aspen Institute and a member of National Geographic Society’s Explorer’s Council, a distinguished group of top scientists, researchers and explorers who provide advice and counsel to the Society across disciplines and projects.
