DESCRIPTION:*Race and Ethnicity in History Lecture Series*\n\nThis is the s
econd of five lectures by History Department faculty on the \ntheme of 'Ra
ce and Ethnicity in History.' The series is cosponsored by the \nDean of I
ntercultural Development and the Africana Studies Program.\n\nIn the 1890s
\, a generation (or less) after the abolition of 'black' slavery \nin the
United States and Brazil\, North American and European social and \npoliti
cal activists attacked a scourge they described as the 'White Slave \nTraf
fic.' This term referred to the international trade of (mostly East \nEuro
pean) women for the purposes of prostitution. The campaign highlighted \nt
he intersection between sex and race present not only at the dawn of the
\ntwentieth century\, but also during earlier phases of slavery. The lectu
re \nwill also consider the sudden re-emergence of the ethnicized sex work
er in \npublic imagination since the end of the Cold War.
