Kate Brown, Professor of History at UMBC, will deliver the Col. Wilson B. Powell Symposium lecture at noon.  Brown is a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow and author of Plutopia: Nuclear Families in Atomic Cities and the Great Soviet and American Plutonium Disasters (Oxford 2013), which won seven prizes including the American Historical Association’s John Dunning and Albert J. Beveridge prizes. Her first book, A Biography of No Place: From Ethnic Borderland to Soviet Heartland (Harvard 2004), won the AHA’s George Louis Beer Prize for the best book in international history. She is currently writing a history of human survival and endurance among the communities circling the Pripiat Marshes. Lunch will be provided.
