Nash went on to become one \nof the pioneers o f the Civil Rights Movement.\n\nNash's involvement in the nonviolent movem ent began in 1959 while she was a \nstudent at Fisk University. In 1960 sh e became the chairperson of the student \nsit-in movement in Nashville\, T ennessee—the first southern city to \ndesegregate its lunch counters—as we ll as one of the founding students of \nthe Student Non-violent Coordinati ng Committee. In 1961 she coordinated the \nFreedom Ride from Birmingham\, Alabama\, to Jackson\, Mississippi\, a story which \nwas documented in th e recent PBS American Experience film /Freedom Riders/.\n\nHer many arrest s for her civil rights activities culminated in Nash being \nimprisoned fo r 10 days in 1961\, while she was pregnant with her first child. \nUndeter red\, she went on to join a national committee—to which she was \nappointe d by President John F. Kennedy—that promoted passage of the Civil \nRights Act of 1964.\n\nNash later became active in the peace movement that worke d to end the Vietnam \nWar\, and became an instructor in the philosophy an d strategy of non-violence \nas developed by Mohandas Gandhi.\n\nDiane Nas h is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the War Resisters' \nLea gue Peace Award\; the Distinguished American Award presented by the John F . \nKennedy Library\; the LBJ Award for Leadership in Civil Rights from th e Lyndon \nBaines Johnson Library and Museum\; and an honorary doctorate o f human letters \nfrom Fisk University\, her alma mater.
