DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bodenhorn\, a leading economic historian at Clemson Univers
ity will give a \ngeneral interest lecture on an ongoing project titled\,
The Economics of Crime \nand Punishment in the Prohibition-Era South. The
lecture will offer a \ncritical historical lens that aligns with bicentenn
ial themes of \ninstitutional evolution and enduring societal challenges.
This presentation \nwill explore how economic incentives influenced the ap
plication of justice \nduring a key period of national social experimentat
ion. Dr. Bodenhorn will \nprovide the audience with a framework to help us
recognize relevant parallels \nbetween the economic pressures on the just
ice system a century ago (as the \nCollege's enrollment grew from 500 to 1
000 students) and the ongoing policy \ndebates regarding mass incarceratio
n and penal labor today. This will thus \nposition the bicentennial not on
ly as a celebration of the past\, but as an \nimpetus for contemporary civ
 ic discussion.\n
