DESCRIPTION:*Title: *Computing with ultra-sparse spikes: toward brain-inspi
 red algorithms \nfor energy-efficient AI\n\n*Abstract:* AI has achieved o
r surpassed human-level performance in many \ntasks\, but current artific
ial neural networks require substantial \ncomputational and energy resour
ces. These costs increasingly constrain the \nscaling of AI models and th
eir deployment on edge devices such as robots. In \ncontrast\, the brain
performs sophisticated real-time computations with \nremarkable energy ef
ficiency. Understanding the computational principles that \nenable this e
fficiency may therefore provide new directions for \nenergy-efficient AI.
\nNeurons in the brain communicate primarily through spikes\, which are
\nnonlinear excursions of membrane potentials. Because generating and \nt
ransmitting spikes is energetically costly\, the brain often operates with
\nremarkably sparse spiking activity. This raises a fundamental question
: how \nmuch useful computation can be achieved with very few spikes?\n\n
In this talk\, I will show that important computations\, including finding
the \nmaximum among competing inputs and recognizing auditory objects in
continuous \nsensory streams\, can be performed using ultra-sparse spike
 s. I will also \ndiscuss how these computational principles can be implem
ented in neuromorphic \nhardware\, including spin-based systems\, providi
ng a potential route toward \nmore energy-efficient AI.\n\n* **Anyone fro
m the campus community is welcome\, but note that the talk will \nassume
at least 1-2 years of physics classes as background.*\n \n
