DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging look into the core principles that have
shaped \nLafayette Engineering for more than 160 years. Case studies fro
m our rich \nheritage will explore the values guiding Lafayette Engineeri
ng into the \nfuture\, including:\n\n * Empowering students to lean into
their individuality and unique\n perspectives.\n * Balancing the diverse
  considerations that shape real-world engineering\n work.\n * Learning f
rom exceptional faculty instructors and mentors.\n\nDiscover how Lafayette
’s timeless principles equip engineers to meet the \nchallenges of today
and tomorrow.\n\nMichael Bennett '17 earned a BS in Civil Engineering and
BA in History from \nLafayette College\, an MS in civil engineering (geot
echnical focus) from \nVirginia Tech\, and is currently pursuing a PhD in
civil engineering with a \ngeotechnical focus at Virginia Tech. He retur
ned to graduate study after 6 \nyears in practice\, where he worked prima
rily on transportation infrastructure \nprojects.\n\nThe event will be pr
eceded by a 6:30 reception in the lobby.\n\nThe event will also be livestr

DESCRIPTION:Come hear from the Hanson Center Visiting Scholar for 2026-27\,
*Dr. Mary C. \nMurphy.*  Dr. Murphy [1] is an internationally recognized
scholar in \nadvancing diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, and the Herm
an B. Wells Endowed \nProfessor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at In
diana University [2]. Dr. \nMurphy's research shows that mindsets are not
just individual beliefs\; they \nare also shaped by classrooms\, workpla
ces\, and organizational cultures. These \nlocal cultures can either prom
 ote learning\, collaboration\, and inclusion or \nreinforce threat\, fixe
d ability beliefs\, and inequality. Her work spans \ngrowth mindset\, ste
reotype threat\, belonging\, identity threat\, and the social \ncues that
shape motivation and performance\, especially in STEM fields and \nother
settings.\n\nThe author of more than 100 publications\, Dr. Murphy was aw
arded the 2019 \nPresidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engin
eers\, the highest \naward bestowed on early career scholars by the U.S.
government. Her book\, \n/Cultures of Growth: How the New Science of Mind

Murphy is  an elected fellow of the American Association for the \nAdvanc

DESCRIPTION:Since receiving his BS in Chemical Engineering\, Hank Cauley '7
7 has woven a \ncareer that spanned work from Somalia refugee camps to co
rporate board rooms \nto tropical forests in Papua New Guinea to launchin
g a social justice \norganization focused on climate change. He has creat
ed\, turned around\, and \nbuilt seven major programs from scratch or wit
hin organizations\, each one \nasking him to apply an engineer's instinct
 s — systems thinking\, disciplined \nproblem-solving\, comfort with ambig
uity — to problems no engineering course \never described. What looks fro
m the outside like an eclectic\, even improbable \npath has\, from the in
side\, followed a consistent logic: find where the need \nis real\, build
the thing that meets it\, and let the destination stay open.\n\nIn this t
alk\, Hank will share stories from across that path — moments of \nclarit
 y\, hard failures\, and necessary compromises — and the insights he's \nd
rawn from each. He'll make the case that an engineering degree is not a
\nnarrow track but a foundation flexible enough to carry a career anywhere
\npurpose leads it\, and he'll leave students with practical ways to thi
nk about \ntheir own first steps: how to recognize the transferable skill
underneath the \ncredential\, how to find work that impacts real people\
, how to create and \nmanage teams to take on complex challenges\, and ho
w to build a career that \nstays enjoyable along the way.\n\nThis event w
ill be livestreamed. Watch \nlive: https://youtube.com/live/Ue-jD39zMVo?f
