DESCRIPTION:The Quadricentennial of the King James Version of the Bible has
stimulated \ndiscussion about numerous issues from its impact on the stan
dardization of \nthe English language to the influence on literature\, art
\, music\, and \npolitics. Little attention is paid to the early illustra
ted King James \nBibles. In part the role of Puritans in this new transla
tion suggests that \nany hint of idolatry would have been avoided. In add
ition\, the strict \nprotection of who could print this new translation wh
ich had no illustrations \nhas further fed the notion that there were no i
llustrated King James Bibles. \nThis lecture sets the historical context
for the new translation within the \nhistory of illuminated and illustrate
d Bibles. Often forgotten in a time \nwhen every household and hotel room
seems to have a Bible is the recognition \nthat the earliest means of tra
nsmitting the Bible was through images and \npictures.
