Guitarists Michael Newman and Laura Oltman return to Lafayette as the Alan and Wendy Pesky Artists-in-Residence, and we proudly feature them in this concert with guest violinist Timothy Fain. In addition to an array of music from their broad touring repertory, Newman and Oltman will collaborate with Fain in arrangements for violin and guitars, including music from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and works by Pablo Sarasate and Manuel de Falla. Fain will also perform solo music composed for him by Philip Glass. Newman and Oltman’s concert tours have taken them to cultural centers and premier venues throughout the world. The Duo has demonstrated extraordinary stylistic breadth in their collaborations with such diverse artists as author Frank McCourt (Angela’s Ashes), Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops, mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, violinist Arnold Steinhardt, fiddler Eileen Ivers, and string quartets such as ETHEL, Calder, Daedalus and Turtle Island. Their many recordings (including Songs of Spain, Laments and Dances, Tango Suite!, and Christmas Pastorale) have garnered critical praise: “A reference standard” (Billboard), “a finely blended sound and true unity of timbre and style” (The New York Times), “beautifully realized performances” (Guitar Player).
