DESCRIPTION:Forecasts of the economy play a key role in monetary and fiscal
policy \ndecisions. Economists study forecasts and forecast errors in ord
er to \nunderstand the value (or lack of value) of such forecasts under va
rious \nconditions. In this talk I will discuss my research on measuring
and \ncomparing forecast errors across private sector and government forec
asters. \nI will discuss how the Great Moderation starting in the early 1
980s and the \nFederal Reserve’s movement toward greater transparency star
ting in the \nearly 1990s affected forecasts and forecast errors. I will
show how policy \nactions by the Federal Reserve\, which are based on fore
casts\, appear to \naffect the forecastability of the economy. I conclude
with a discussion of \nhow past errors in forecasting may have affected p
 ast monetary policy \ndecisions.
