DESCRIPTION:Categories: Presentations & Lectures [1]Faculty & Staff Spotlig
 ht \n[2]Homepage Spotlight [3]When: Wednesday\, March 6\, 2013 - 4:15pm t
 o \n6:00pmWhere: Hugel 103Presenter: Richard FrankPrice: FreeThis year's
\nRichard E Welch Memorial Lecturer is Richard B. Frank\, acclaimed histo
rian of \nWorld War II. The presentation will address two main themes.
The first of \nthese is to replace a framework for the Asian-Pacific War
overwhelmingly \ncentered on the conflict between Japan and the United St
ates to one that \napproaches this phase of World War II as a struggle eq
ually involving the \npeoples of the Asian continent and the Pacific regi
ons. The second theme \nwill be how the new scholarship transforms our u
nderstanding of the \nAsian-Pacific War. Particular emphasis will be acc
orded the long neglected \nbut huge role of China in both the course of t
he Asian-Pacific and the global \nstruggles. In that context\, the achie
vements and failures of Chiang Kai-shek \n(Jiang Jieshi or Jiang Zhongzhe
ng)\, Mao Zedong and Joseph Stillwell in light \nof the new scholarship w
ill be discussed. Other major issues include: the \nclaims and realities
of Japan’s professed mission of the liberation of \nAsian peoples\; the
horrendous loss and suffering of noncombatants\; and \nfinally the degree
to which the Asian-Pacific War shapes the world of the \nTwenty-First Ce
ntury. Sponsored by: History Department\, Richard E Welch \nMemorial Lec
