DESCRIPTION:Baruch College presents the exhibition Franz Kline: Coal and St
eel at the \nMishkin Gallery from Friday February 8 to March 8\, 2013.\n\n
Franz Kline (1910-1962)\, one of the most famous painters of the mid-twent
ieth \ncentury\, is well known for his large\, abstract\, black and white
paintings. \nHowever\, his early representational work is almost unknown.
Franz Kline: Coal \nand Steel specifically focuses on Kline’s progression
from representation \nto abstraction by emphasizing his early work\, and t
he prominence of his often \noverlooked use of coal mining imagery through
out his career.\n\nFranz Kline: Coal and Steel features 49 paintings and d
rawings by Franz \nKline\, along with supplementary photographs\, graphic
works\, and other \ndocumentary materials. There are several works on loan
from the National \nGallery of Art\, Washington D.C.\, along with rarely
seen paintings belonging \nto private collectors. Works in the exhibition
include Chief (Train) \n(1942)\,Street Scene Greenwich Village (1943)\, Se
 lf-Portrait (1946)\, \nPennsylvania Landscape (1948-49)\, and Study for Ca
boose (1961)\, among others.\n\nIn addition\, this exhibition includes sev
eral documentary photographs of \nPennsylvania anthracite mines and miners
by photographer George Harvan. His \nphotographs provide a clear\, visual
record of the type of environment—the \ncoal chutes\, trains\, and smokes
tacks—with which Kline would have been \nfamiliar.\n\nThe Mishkin Gallery\
 , located at 135 E. 22nd Street at Lexington\, is free and \nopen to the p
ublic. For information about the gallery\, call Sandra Kraskin \nat (646)
  660-6652.
