All are invited to attend a talk by Maria Christine Muyco, composer/ethnomusicologist at the University of the Philippines, during a special session of People’s Liberation Music (MUS109). Prof. Myuco will discuss recent music based on her fieldwork among Southeast Asian cultures: the Tai-Yai of Northern Thailand, Bidayuh of Sarawak, Malaysia, Hmong in Laos and the Panay Bukidnon of the Philippines. Using both standard-western notation for formally trained musicians and “user-friendly” manuscripts for music-making with research participants, Muyco engages issues of environmental loss & displacement. Prof. Muyco’s presentation will include a musical demonstration by her husband, Titus Levi, professor of radio and media studies at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
