Although the virgin birth has been an important part of Christian doctrine for centuries, the notion hangs on a very thin literary thread, especially in the Gospel of Matthew. What this author is really trying to say about Mary’s sexuality may be more fully understood by closer attention to the four women he names in his genealogy of Jesus, women whose stories appear in the Hebrew Bible and who are hardly virgins! All these women, who will be the focus of this lecture, bring intimations of strangeness—illicit sex, deceit, and sometimes unexpected power—to the ancestry of Jesus and to the story of Mary.
