In 2011, vibraphonist Stefon Harris traveled with some fellow jazz musicians to Havana for two weeks of workshops, jam sessions, and studio recordings with a cohort of young Cuban musicians. The recording they produced and the accompanying documentary film, both titled Ninety Miles Project, celebrated the extraordinary musical pipeline that links Cuba’s music with American jazz. The magic of this cultural exchange has been repackaged for a limited U.S. tour, with Harris as leader and fellow headliners David Sanchez and Nicholas Payton. Saxophonist Sanchez’ Puerto Rican roots offer a kindred voice to Cuban culture, and trumpet powerhouse Payton adds the musical chemistry of his native New Orleans, the original melting pot of Afro-Caribbean musical influences in American jazz. Backing the three melodic leads is a terrific rhythm section, all of Latin-American heritage: drummer Henry Cole, pianist Ed Simon, Mauricio Herrara on congas, and bassist Luques Curtis. Presented as the 26th annual Easton Jazz Festival, in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Easton.
