DESCRIPTION:Lafayette College is pleased to announce its collaboration with
Burmese \nwriter and journalist\, Khet Mar. Born in 1969 Burma\, Khet Mar
is now a \nresident of City of Asylum in Pittsburgh\, a sanctuary for wri
ters who \nsuffered persecution in their home countries. Khet Mar first vi
sited \nLafayette College in November 2011 through the combined efforts of
Jim Toia\, \nDirector of the Creative and Performing Arts (CaPA) Fellowsh
ip program\, and \nProfessor Curlee Holton\, Director of Lafayette’s Exper
imental Printmaking \nInstitute (EPI). The CaPA Fellowship is made possibl
e by the generosity of \nBruce '65 and Jackie P '02 Maggin and the Maggin
Family.\n\nCurrently\, EPI is producing Khet Mar’s limited edition\, fine
artist’s \nbook\, 'The Souls of Fallen Flowers.' This edition of twenty-fi
ve hand sewn\, \nhand bound books are individually printed by specially se
lected digital\, \nserigraphic\, and relief processes on archival material
 s. Hand printed \nelements are used as emblems throughout the book\, givin
g it figurative and \nmeaningful punctuation. Also giving the book special
distinction are the \ntranslucent images juxtaposed over text\, echoing t
he layers of meaning in \nKhet Mar’s writing and her husband\, Than’s artw
ork. EPI’s resident book \nartist\, MaryAnn Miller is working with Khet Ma
r on the book\, faithfully \nreproducing its brilliant color from original
art. Miller calls the book “a \nwindow into a treacherous world\, gently
opened for the reader\,” and refers \nto its “beautiful\, atmospheric writ
ing\, capturing a great love for \ncommunity and country.” Scott Lyttle\,
EPI’s digital printing technician\, \nis also working on digitally printin
g the book.\n\nThree Lafayette students are also participating on the publ
ication with Khet \nMar and Miller. The first\, Christa Martinez ‘13 works
with Miller on \nbinding procedures for the Mar book. She is presently wo
rking as a teaching \nassistant and apprentice for Professor Holton. An ex
ceptionally gifted \nartist\, and a member of McKelvey House\, Martinez pl
ans to pursue honors in \nstudio art during her senior year. The second s
tudent\, Sarah Quickel ‘13 \nassists Miller with the letter press process
and organization of the book \ndesign. Quickel has worked as Professor Hol
ton's teaching assistant and as an \nintern doing advanced graphic arts an
d drawing projects. She recently \nreceived her first professional paintin
g commission\, and will be \nparticipating in study abroad in Europe durin
g her spring semester. The third \nstudent\, Elizabeth Anderson ‘14\, is i
nvolved with CaPA\, and will continue \nworking with Professor Holton on t
his project through the summer.\n\nThis will be Khet Mar’s first book publ
ished in the United States\, as well \nas EPI’s first publically promoted
publication. The publication of this \nlimited edition will also serve to
commemorate EPI’s fifteenth year of \noperation\, and its commitment to ar
t of all mediums. 'The Souls of Fallen \nFlowers' is a token of the colleg
e’s collaborative spirit\, and hopefully \nthe first of many books publish
ed by what could be known as “The Lafayette \nLimited Editions Press.”\n\n
EPI\, along with CaPA\, the Friends of Skillman Library\, the office of th
e \nProvost\, and the English Department will be hosting a reception honor
ing \nLafayette’s collaboration with such a courageous and gifted writer o
 n \nFebruary 24th\, 2012 from 4:30-6:30pm at the Chateau Chavaniac in East
 on\, \nPennsylvania. If you'd like to attend this event\, please contact A
 nna \nSchaefer at 610-330-5922 or schaefea@lafayette.edu [1] by Friday\, F
 ebruary \n17.\n\n[1] mailto:schaefea@lafayette.edu
