DESCRIPTION:June Schlueter\, Lafayette's former provost and Professor Emeri
ta of English\, \nwill talk about her new book just published by the Briti
sh Library\, The Album \nAmicorum and the London of Shakespeare's Time. Th
 e album amicorum\, or book of \nfriends\, a precursor to modern-day autogr
aph books\, originated in Germany in \nthe middle of the sixteenth century
and very quickly became fashionable among \nstudents moving from one univ
ersity to another in the course of their \nacademic careers. Professors an
d fellow students made contributions to these \nalbums\, including inscrip
tions and illustrations\, which were often by \nsignificant scholars or pr
ofessional artists of the time.\nThis book by June Schlueter is the first
full-length study in English of the \nalbum amicorum and secures its place
as an insightful but under-examined \ngenre in the study of early modern
culture. Schlueter focuses specifically on \nthe many traces of Shakespear
e’s London contained in alba amicorum during \nthe period\, as scholars tr
aveled to London and recorded their impressions and \ntheir encounters wit
h Londoners. These selections from alba amicorum provide \na perspective o
 n the culture\, politics\, religion\, economics\, and \nentertainment of t
he sixteenth century. These firsthand insights provide an \nintegral histo
rical picture of early modern England.
