Yvette Christiansë is a poet, novelist, and scholar of postcolonial Africa and the history of African slavery. Born in South Africa, she fled the apartheid regime with her family, moving to Australia and eventually to New York City, where she is now Associate Professor of English and Postcolonial Studies at Barnard College. Her acclaimed poetry collection Castaway tells the tangled histories of the island of St. Helena, while her novel Unconfessed gives voice to a woman living in slavery in 19th-century South Africa. Her latest poetry volume, Imprendehora, explores the tragedies and contradictions of African slavery as it moved between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Christiansë will read selected poems at 4:10pm and there will be a Q&A pizza dinner at 5:30pm.
