Abstract: The free iOS app “iFlakes” interactively produces 6-fold symmetric designs. (Available on the App Store for your iPhone or iPad, just search on “iFlakes”.) I'll trace the inspiration for these designs through the string art of the 70's and Dale Seymour's excellent text Line Designs then contrast them to spirograph and kaleidoscope images. We'll then talk about the plane geometry basis for the designs, the combinatorial possibilities for various iFlake bases and maybe even some notions about higher dimensional “iFlake spaces”. Finally, some future directions for iFlakes will be discussed and a new notion, GEDSI Communities, will be introduced.
