This forum will provide an exchange of ideas on the limits of liberal democracy and the reach of considerations for religious sensitivities. Is the divide between faiths or is it between extremists and moderates? Many Muslims embrace dialogue and peaceful co-existence with people of other religions, especially fellow "people of the book": Jews and Christians, but Islamist extremism continues to overpower public discourse about Islam. Liberal democratic values of free expression often demand that little or no speech be censored, yet in the United States we have a tradition of pluralism and mutual respect that means that Charlie Hebdo-style satire (like depictions of Muhammad) are rarely reprinted here. What does this mean for public debates about Islam, Muslims, and western-style democracies?

Profs. Fabian, Lalande, and Patel will present and lead the discussion.

Pizza will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
