The recent shooting death of unarmed Black male teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO has become an all-too familiar scenario in the United States. As social media networks and news pundits flood us with images remeniscent of the 1960s, how do we make sense of these sorts of incidents in 2014?

A panel of Lafayette students and faculty will grapple with important questions such as:

  • Is this about race? Age? Gender? A combination of all three?
  • To what can we attribute the militarization of local police forces?
  • Is the MO community responding appropriately (e.g. looting, rioting)?
  • How might gun policies be revised to help address this issue?
  • What are other sociopolitical factors should we be talking about when we think about U.S. race relations?

Panelists include:

Dr. Robert Blunt, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies
Dion King `15, Economics
Hubert Lavie `17, Film and Media Studies
Dr. Brittany Perry, Assistant Professor of Government and Law
Dr. Wendy Wilson-Fall, Associate Professor and Chair of Africana Studies

Lunch will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis
