Garrett Fagan, Professor of Ancient History at The Pennsylvania State University, is a prolific and innovative scholar and sought-after lecturer. His work covers many aspects of Roman society, politics, and culture. In this lecture, he will examine the bases of ancient Rome's fascination with gladiatorial combats and other forms of violent spectacle. Deploying comparative historical perspectives and the insights of social psychology, Fagan goes beyond earlier, context-bound explanations. He reaches broader and more disturbing conclusions about what was going on in the stands of the Roman arena.
